The Yarborough Oak:
The Tree That Owned Itself

The Hopkins Workshop: Birthplace of Georgia Tech

Picture
In 1877, Isaac Stiles Hopkins, then a teacher of Latin, built this workshop next to his home on Wesley Street so he could teach Emory boys woodworking skills. When he became president of Emory College in 1884, he launched a "Technological Training General Education Program." The program was so successful, the Georgia Legislature established the Georgia Institute of Technology and Hopkins was chosen to be its first president.
