Mary Eve Wright
1880 - 1962

Picture
Daughter of Augustus and Louisa Wright, Mary Wright was born in Oxford and attended Paine College in Augusta, one of the few colleges that accepted people of color at that time.  She returned to Oxford and became a community leader.  She taught at the Rust Chapel United Methodist Church, which was an all-volunteer school for African American children.  She was one of the first teachers at the Oxford (Rosenwald) School when it opened in 1921.  She later taught at the Washington Street School in Covington and retired from the R. L. Cousins School.

Wright was a lifetime member of Rust Chapel Church where she served as Sunday school teacher and superintendent and vacation bible school teacher.
