The Williams Family

Picture
The Williams Family is one of Oxford’s early families.  Ira (1894 – 1975) and Verna (1895 – 1975) Williams were married 52 years at the time of his death.  They raised four children in Oxford, all of whom attended Palmer Stone Elementary School.

Garland (1918 - 2003), son of Ira and Verna, worked for Wales Ellis in the construction business, specializing in cabinet making.  Garland also served on Oxford’s city council and as a volunteer firefighter and was active in the Oxford Lion’s Club.  Garland’s wife, Sara (1908 - ) worked for the Belk Department Store for 18 years and still lives in Oxford.

Garland’s brother, Clarence (1920 – 1994), also worked for Wales Ellis, but as a painter.  Another brother, Bryon (“Sonny”) (1929 -  ) worked for General Motors in Atlanta all his adult life, until his retirement.  The three brothers all built their own homes as well as the homes of their children.  They also built the homes of other family members in Covington and Oxford.

Ira and Verna’s only daughter, Kathryn (1926 – 2013) married Jess Bryant and lived in Florida where she worked as a nurse at St. Petersburg Junior College her entire career.
