Memories
by Arie Mayo Heard
Daughter of Mildred Stone Mayo and Granddaughter of Bonnell Stone and Edna Ausland Stone
I remember, in 1950, or there abouts, I was about five or six years of age and I remember walking with my grandmother to Old Church on Sunday nights. The lamps were lit, for there was no electricity at that time in the building. It was the only building I ever went into without electricity.
I remember, around 1955, I remember flying down Wesley Street, which was a dirt road at the time, on my cousin Virgil’s horse.
I remember, in the summer of 1960, all the streets in Oxford were being paved in one day.
remember the day when two new dormitories were being named at the college; one was Bonnell and one was Stone, for my grandfather, and I went to the dedication.
I remember being told about my father, Paul Mayo, and mother, Mildred Stone, meeting at Emory at Oxford, courting, and marrying in the Stone House on June 1, 1934, and Suzanne Eady being her maid of honor.
