Joseph E. Guillebeau
1925 - 2001
Guillebeau earned a PhD in music composition from the University of Iowa and joined the Oxford College faculty in 1954 as professor of humanities. He was also an authority on Greek art and taught poetry, drama, painting, and music appreciation. Guillebeau was a gifted pianist and composer. He served as president of the Covington Music Club and composed music for the college choir and the Allen Memorial Church choir, as well as the high school and community theatre productions. He wrote several works for choir which were premiered under his direction at Allen Memorial Church in the 1950s.
His Creation was performed at Glen Memorial Church of Emory University in June 2001, and his Christmas Cantata was performed at the Oxford Christmas Chorale in December 2001. He was also an accomplished painter and conducted art seminars for the community. In 1973, Guillebeau was commissioned by the college to do a painting of Seney Hall. Many of his paintings are on display on the Oxford campus.
