John Lovern was the brother of James Chessel Lovern, a bishop in the Methodist church in Texas.  John was born in Oxford and, after a long and distinguished military career, he returned to Oxford with his wife, Frances.  He worked for Oxford College in charge of housing security.  Both were leaders in Allen Memorial Church, leaving a legacy that provided for the construction of the church’s social hall, named Lovern Hall in their honor.
