Frances Hardy Elizer
1916 - 2011
Frances Hardy Elizer served as an Oxford College library assistant for 23 years. She was active in her community, serving as a member of the Allen Memorial Church for 65 years, a member of the Amitie Club, and a member of the Oxford Historical Shrine Society.
Elizer was truly a woman ahead of her time; long before the days of environmental activism, Elizer instituted her own neighborhood beautification and recycling program by walking the streets of Oxford, picking up trash.
Fran and her husband, Marshall raised two daughters in Oxford, Roberta Elizer Piper and Marcia Elizer Floyd.
In 2000, she and her husband, the late Marshall Ridley Elizer, were awarded the R. Carl Chandler Award for Lifetime Achievement for service to Oxford College. That same year, an endowed scholarship was established in her honor.
At age 95, Mrs. Elizer said that she wanted to live long enough to attend the next library ground-breaking – which she did. The ground-breaking ceremony for the new library was held in 2011, two days before she passed away.
