Dallas Mathew Tarkenton, Sr.

Dallas Tarkenton was the father of pro football Hall of Famer, Fran Tarkenton. Fran Tarkenton, at the time of his retirement, held every major quarterback record in professional football. Dallas Tarkenton Sr. was a Pentecostal minister and worked at Oxford College as an associate professor of social science. He was also Registrar and Director of Admissions and Recruitment. Tarkenton served as an officer in the International Rotary Club and was an active member of Allen Memorial United Methodist Church.
A scholarship at Oxford College was established in his name.
Tarkenton died of a heart attack at age 63 while watching his son play in the infamous Vikings – Cowboys game on television. His death came in the third quarter, before his son’s famous “Hail Mary” pass.
