Claude Phillips graduated from Oxford College and went on to get his JD degree from Atlanta Law School.  Philips joined the Army when the United States entered World War II and continued his military career for 21 years, reaching the rank of Major.  When Phillips retired from military service, he returned to Oxford and served on the staff of Oxford College.

In 1946, Phillips married Jean Cochran.  They raised a large family of seven children.

Jean was a music teacher for over 50 years as well as a church pianist and organist.  She gave musical performances for countless church and community events, weddings, and nursing homes for over five decades.  She was an active member in of the Brown Bridge Christian Church and founding member of the Covington Christian Church.  Phillips touched countless lives through her volunteer literacy work, teaching adults and children to read.
